Liner notes

Mix Title: As I enter my mid-40s, I find myself not giving a shit what people think of me or hiding who I am, my ups and downs, my good points and utter failures. Music is confessional. So this is my confession. The music is basic and not hipster but then again, neither am I.

1, “You’ve Got the Love” – probably the closest I get to feeling a religious connection

2. “Wow,” – it’s Kylie. End of story.

3. “A Milli” – I feel like a shitty feminist but I love this song.

4. “Sail” – I first saw this performed on The Voice UK and when it was on “Fleabag,” I loved it even more.

5. “Bulletproof” – even Kim Kardashian loves this song. It could literally have been something I llistened to in 1987.

6. “Remember Me” – it lasts FOREVER but in 1999 it was a great song to be high to.

7. “Jolene” – in 2000, I remember seeing an interview with Dolly where she said, “Nobody buys my damn albums.” She can’t say that any longer. Dolly is life.

8. “Casimir Pulaski Day” – the only song I only ever tear up to.

9. “Get Together” – in 1991, I made my friend Julie watch “Truth or Dare” about 100 times with me. I knew I was gay and I hated having to hide. Watching Madonna and her dancers be so wild and free made me determined that someday I would be the same.

10. “Truth Hurts” – I have lost 100 lbs but it came at a price, namely shame at my size and even now I struggle so much with my self-image, drilled into me by society by decades. If I had Lizzo in life earlier, I might have been so much more comfortable with who I am.

11. “Skyscraper” – Sam Bailey won The X Factor UK and has the most incredible voice, but her career never took off and she’s honest about that. I’ve seen her live in England and it’s shitty how she’s been dismissed. This cover is 10,000x better than the Demi Lovato version.

12. “Gossip Folks” – Missy is one of this most influential artists of our generation.

13. “Back to Black” – Amy is the most confessional of singers and I miss her.

14. “Love Letter to Japan” – the love of my life is 3,000 miles away to the east. Every day I lay down my heart precisely at her feet and the ups and downs of the past eight years all are worth it. I can’t wait to marry her.

15. “This is America” – this current administration has forced us to examine issues of race and privilege. This song brought those to the forefront.

16. “Doo Wop” — does anyone ever know what Lauryn Hill is talking about??

17. “Cafe del Mar” – I spent my first two years as an out lesbian doing a lot of drugs in a lot of gay clubs. This song was my favorite to hear when I was coming up on ecstasy. I know I was self-medicating through drugs but I don’t regret those days – I felt so free finally being my true self.

18. “Bedshaped” – the lead singer of Keane described the term “bedshaped” as the impression in your bed when you’re so depressed that you never leave. While medication has greatly helped my bipolar mood swings, I do get bedshaped from time to time.

19. LDN – Lily Allen is so dope and this reminds me of my four years living in London.

20. “This is Gallifrey, Our Childhood, Our Home” – I don’t have many hobbies but my deep and abiding love for Doctor Who makes me joyful and frankly, I don’t give a fuck if this seems like a silly choice. It’s part of what defines me – literally, as I have a massive TARDIS tattoo on my back.
